(Ecofin Agency) - Facebook wants to connect to the internet the 4.1 billion people who are still not. That is the firm’s major long term goal for the next decade, its chief of technology officer Mike Schroepfer revealed at the Web Summit 2016 which ended in Lisbon, Portugal, on November 10.
Facebook aims to make the make the “world more open and connected”. To achieve this, it must therefore boost connectivity in Africa. Tests have in fact been announced in San José, California, in this regard.
“We have proceeded to the first test of a huge drone equipped with solar panels (to deal with power deficit) the size of a Boeing 737. Our goal is to create a constellation of these drones to diffuse internet efficiently in areas that are difficult to access,” Schroepfer said.
Facebook also plans to invest in satellite like Google despite recently one which was exploded by a rocket in September. It will not slow our efforts, Schroepfer said commenting the accident.
