Rwanda: Government says $1.6bn needed to implement green growth strategy

Monday, 25 April 2016 15:58

(Ecofin Agency) - Rwanda’s Minister of Natural resources, Vincent Biruta said $1.6 billion were needed to implement national green growth and climate resilience strategy, for 15 years. The strategy includes 14 programmes impacting sectors such as energy, agriculture, water and forest management.

We need growth that can cope with climate change. We are assessing implementation of this and also looking at what is needed to accelerate it. We are discerning what is not yet done and then we are going to help all institutions to integrate budget planning for that,” said Biruta.

The ministry was indeed accredited by Green Climate Fund to support various projects. In fact, it is in the process of developing a rural programme worth $86 million which is to be submitted by the end of the year.

If nothing is done about the implementation of green growth, unpredictable weather events will also burden the public finances,” said Lamin Manned, UN resident coordinator.
