“The only path for our region is the one we are tracing for it”. These were the words uttered by the Representative of King Mohamed VI of Morocco to inaugurate the second edition of the Mediterranean Forum for Climate (MedCop 22).
Taking place on July 18 and 19, 2016 in Tangiers, Morocco, the forum which gathers the 22 countries of the Mediterranean zone aims to initiate virtuous dynamics necessary for the region’s preservation. It will also help the various members establish a strategy to secure at the COP 22, ambitious commitments.
The Mediterranean is one of the regions to be most threatened by global warming. According to the 5th assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), “by 2100, average temperatures could reach 7.5°C while average rains could drop by 60%. As for the sea level, an average increase of 0.4-0.5 m is forecast for the largest part of the Mediterranean”.
In the two days during which the program is taking place, members of the Mediterranean will ponder on positive solutions which can boost positive impacts of existing initiatives and develop ideas that can lead to concrete achievements which will allow the successful implementation of the Paris accord.
The COP 22 which will take place from November 7 to November 18, 2016, in Marrakech, aims to draw a roadmap for the implementation of the accord reached at the COP 21.
