Guinea: New container terminal at Kamsar port

Thursday, 20 October 2016 22:58

(Ecofin Agency) - Guinea opens a new container terminal on October 19 at the Kamsar port to export bauxite output from the mine owned by Emirates Global Aluminum (EGA) through its local subsidiary, Guinea Aluminum Corporation. The terminal will also be used by other parties as an alternative to the Conakry container terminal.

EGA’s bauxite project is born of a $5 billion contract between Emirati Mubadala, who holds a stake in the project, and Guinea signed in 2013. Under the contract, a bauxite mine, an aluminum refinery and port infrastructures were to be developed. Bauxite output from the mine is to be sent to aluminum plants in the United Arab Emirates.

The bauxite mine holds more than a billion ton of the ore and commercial production is expected to start in 2018. Initially, the mine is expected to produce 12 million tons of bauxite a year.
