(Ecofin Agency) - Chad’s president, IdrissDebyItno, who was just chosen by his party to run for the upcoming elections on April 10th, promised on February 10th to reinstate the limit on number of presidential terms.
“Reintroducing term limit in the Constitution should be done for it is the vitality of our young democracy that is at stake here,” he said during the presentation of his political agenda a day only after being selected by the Patriotic Salvation Movement (MPS) to go for a fifth mandate. “We must not concentrate on a system in which a change in power becomes difficult,” he added.
The Head of State has also adopted the same view as his biggest opponent NgarléjyYorongar. “The structure of the State in itself should be revised to put an end to the centralized State. Let’s not be scared to say it. We should seriously think about moving towards a federal system. The federation is not the banner of Yorongar,” he said.
In power for 25 years, IdrissDebyItno, changed the Constitution in 2004 so as to extend his number of mandates. He came into power after a coup, with France’s support, againstHissèneHabré.
