AMEA Power is making significant progress on its commitments in Tunisia, with its 120 MWp solar project in Kairouan now 82% complete, the Emirati company announced on Tuesday. The plant is expected to begin commercial operation before the end of the year.
Launched in May 2024, the project is financed with $86 million from the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the African Development Bank (AfDB). Once operational, it is expected to generate 222 GWh annually, enough to power 43,000 homes and prevent 117,000 tons of CO2 emissions. The plant, built on a Build-Own-Operate model by AMEA’s local subsidiary, Kairouan Solar Plant, highlights the growing role of private investment in Tunisia's energy sector. A 20-year power purchase agreement with the national utility company STEG ensures its integration into the national grid.
In parallel, AMEA is developing a 200 MW solar plant in Tataouine, with contracts for the project signed in May 2024. This facility is projected to generate 552,000 MWh per year, power over 102,000 households, and prevent nearly 280,800 tons of CO2 emissions, confirming the company's strategic role in the country.
These developments come as Tunisia aims to have 35% of its electricity mix come from renewable sources by 2030. The national strategy plans to install 8,530 MW of renewable capacity and reduce energy sector emissions by 46% by 2035, while pursuing the goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.
Against this backdrop, AMEA Power’s projects are a symbol of a new vision for energy supply and a concrete test of Tunisia’s ability to turn its ambitions into lasting achievements.
