(Ecofin Agency) - The Ethiopian manufacturing sector met only 50% of its 2017/2018 exports target, Ambachew Mekonnen, Ethiopia’s minister of industry indicated last week.
Indeed, according to figures by Ethiopian news website The Reporter, the manufacturing sector exported $487.5 million worth of goods against a $997.9 million target set by the government.
This was due to currency and industrial output shortage, instability in the electricity supply and civil strife which decreased these performances that represented 45.9% of the country’s total exports during the period under review.
Let’s remind that this year, the performances in this sector are below the target set in the growth and transformation agenda (GTP-II) initiated by the government which should allow the sector to generate $3.5 billion by 2020 with annual growth estimated at 21%.
