(Ecofin Agency) - Morocco’s National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA) just blocked Google Duo, another VoIP app.
According to news website Telquel.ma, the app kept working until now, despite the regulatory authority blocking VoIP, by using WebRTC, a sub-technology different from that used by Skype, Viber, or WhatsApp. With Google Duo blocked, concerns now turn toward Imo which is still accessible but uses the same technology.
On June 2, 2016, the government of Morocco, after months during which telecom operators denounced VoIP companies using their networks freely, released the Act 2.16.347 for “procedures to follow in the case of litigation, unfair competition and economic concentration operations”, established by the Ministry of Industry, Trade, Investment and Digital Economy.
Through this decree, the Moroccan government took all the measures needed to put an end to all telecom-related activities considered as unfair competition. It also guarantees users of public telecom public networks recognized by the State exclusivity over all calls forwarded to an end client. The telecom regulator and operators were have all power to block any activity they deem to be unfair competition.
