(Ecofin Agency) - Mobile operator MTN Ghana won the bid for 4G telecommunications licence in Ghana, launched by the National Communications Authority (NCA). MTN Ghana beating four other bid-runners was awarded the 15 years 4G/LTE licence in 800 MHz in spectrum band for $67.5 million.
The company expressed its interest in 4G technology during a press conference organized before receiving the licence. The group’s CEO, Ebenezer Twum Asante, highlighted that the company was already prepared to deploy 4G in the country. He explained that MTN Ghana would offer a better experience to its customers. “For either individuals or firms, connectivity is now available on all sorts of devices and this is what gives rise to a need for more significant capacities to meet the high data consumption thus meeting consumers’ needs”, he said. 4G comes to unclog already saturated 2G and 3G networks.
MTN Ghana has already deployed fiber optic cable in several places, cities mostly. With this 4G licence, the group has now been enabled to provide this offer to its customers.
