(Ecofin Agency) - In Tanzania, the Ministry of Energy and Minerals has announced that the government has implemented a bulk procurement system for the importation of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in the country. This system is to take effective from September this year.
According to the deputy permanent secretary of the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, Juliana Pallangyo (photo), all interested parties are free to partake in the supply of the product.“The government is looking forward to change the system effectively September this year. Under the bulk procurement system, it will be easier for local dealers to get LPG from a reliable supplier,” she said.Pallangyo added that the importation of gas under this new system is likely to succeed under the Petroleum and Bulk Procurement Agency (PBPA).
The PBPA was set up by the Tanzanian government in 2013. The aim of the agency is to ease the importation of petroleum products and encourage productivity in the sector. With the bulk procurement, it will be easy to regulate LPG prices and safeguard reliable supply in the country.
“Sub-Sahara and developing Asia account for a whopping 95 per cent of the world’s 1.3bn people without clean cooking fuel. LPG is considered as the key solution to the region’s electricity and cooking fuel shortage,” she told Oil Review Africa.
