Monday, 04 June 2018 17:10

(Ecofin Agency) - Tunisia’s cereal output in 2018-19 is expected to stand at 1.4 million, down 200,000 from last campaign. The agriculture minister announced yesterday June 3, specifying that this underperformance stemmed from low rainfall.

The envisaged output is set to include 923,000 tons of durum, 119,000 tons of common wheat and 362,000 tons of barley. To achieve self-sufficiency, the government aims, in the long run, to produce 2.7 million tons of which 1.5 million will be durum.

Let’s note that the country which is a major wheat consumer, dedicated about 1.5 million hectares of arable land to grain farming.
