1.5 Million Mozambicans facing food insecurity due to drought

(Ecofin Agency) - In Mozambique, about 1.5 million people face food insecurity due to drought in Southern and Central parts of the country. Director of National Institute of Disaster Management, Joao Machatine specified that 1.3 million people are presently in need of food aid.

It has been evaluated that taking care of drought victims, a month, would cost US$13 million. “Weneed to develop a response plan between the government and the partners and in this meeting, they said they were available to provide support, by mobilizing the necessary resources,” Mr. Machatine said after a meeting with cooperation partners.

The director highlighted that before this meeting, funds had previously been mobilized from countries like Japan, Italy, American agencies and World Bank. Most affected regions include Tete, Sofala, gaza, Manica and Maputo.
