Burkina Faso eyes a 4.7 million tons output for ongoing grain season

Monday, 09 May 2016 16:56

(Ecofin Agency) - Burkina just released its targets for the 2016-2017 grain season. APA has in fact announced that the country plans to produce 4.7 million tons up 12% compared to the previous season.

To achieve this, the government says it will focus on supporting farmers, hydro-agricultural development of arable lands and provision of fertilizers. More specifically, 24,500 hectares, half fo which are lowlands, will be developed. Farmers will have access to more than 16,000 tons of fertilizers and 4,000 tons of enhanced seeds.

In terms of agricultural equipment, government’s subsidy will help provide farmers 11,000 ploughs. The nation eyes an additional revenue of FCFA9 billion and 100,000 tons more of rice.

Government’s decision comes as a reminder as to how important agriculture is for the country. The industry is the main source of job creation of the country ( more than 86% of active population) and contributes today to 40% of its GDP.
