(Ecofin Agency) - On the sidelines of the 7th edition of the Africa green revolution forum, Togo’s prime minister, Komi Selom Klassou, who was representing President Faure Gnassingbé at the event said the four following challenges are the main factors that impair agriculture's growth in Africa:

  1. Climate change
  2. Land issues
  3. Insufficient investment
  4. Lack of access to loans for small producers

These, according to the PM, lead to this following situation: “60 to 70% of the active population across the continent works in the agricultural sector but on that same continent, we often hear of undernutrition, malnutrition and food insecurity”.

To tackle these challenges, Togo’s number two recommended, among others, the implementation of a comprehensive policy for Africa which will insure that small producers come together in various groups so as to easily have access to financing. He also put the accent on local processing of products and strengthening of public-private partnership.
