Agriculture : Togo to adopt micro-irrigation

Thursday, 11 February 2016 09:32

This year, Togo will adopt drip irrigation as its main irrigation system. According to the website Republic of Togo, government keeps investing in the modernization of its agriculture by using a system that uses less water and fertilizer and which thus seems to be the most appropriate for a country that happens to record low rainfall.

This website adds that this decision follows the provision of machinery and improved seeds to some 700,000 farmers last year. Mainly agriculture-focused (more than 80% of its population is active in this sector), Togo opted for a progressive modernization of its agriculture.

Since 2011, Togo adopted an ambitious national programme for agricultural investment and food security (PNIASA) while aiming for an annual agricultural growth of 6%.
