(Ecofin Agency) - Mauritius wishes to make Ghana West Africa’s leading sugar producer and exporter, revealed Seetanah Lutchmeenaraidoo, Mauritius’ minister for Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, in an interview with Business & Financial Times.

In this framework, “we plan to massively invest in Ghana’s sugar production sector to export the commodity to the rest of the world. We will thus develop various sugar production plants in some the country’s regions,” said the official.

Also, plants will be developed in the long term and operates off the national power grid, using sugarcane bagasse as fuel to generate power.

Let’s recall that Mauritius is one of Africa’s leading producers. Last year, the nation produced about 400,000 tons of sugar.
