Senegal: towards the use of 3 billion tons of typha in the construction sector?

Thursday, 13 August 2015 17:27

(Ecofin Agency) - Is there a change in the status of typha in Senegal? The plant which has been long since considered as an invasive species could have a future in construction. Indeed, combined with other binding elements, typha can be used as an effective insulation material.

The current strategy of typha invasion control is centred on eradication since it is considered an invasive plant. Yet, one can use it as a local resource for development, fight against climate change and create a new market for innovative construction materials” the project sponsors of typha as thermal insulation esteem.

According to Ernest Dione who coordinates this initiative of the company Kaito, an experimental house will be constructed with typha insulation panels. If successful, this experiment could be the beginning of a new era in the Senegalese construction industry since the country has a reserve of 3 billion tons of typha according to APS.
