Senegal: Rice farmers claim there is no shortage

Thursday, 17 November 2016 04:03

(Ecofin Agency) - There is no rice shortage in Senegal. That is what declared the president of the national rice farmers association, Ibrahima Thioub said “rice importers are spreading this lie to buy rice outside since it is cheaper than that sold locally”.

According to the official, “the substantial amounts of rice stored in the valley’s warehouses could supply the market if the sellers would buy them. He added that the government should implement a measure that would prohibit rice imports for two months, as it is done for onions, to allow local farmers to sell their stocks,” APS reported.

However, Mr. Thioub agreed that local production was of poor quality and low. “We are having troubles because our hullers are not able to husk the rice in distinct varieties”, he said.
