Monday, 22 February 2016 18:44

The European Union is currently setting up in Kenya, a banana processing unit for 100 million Shillings. The infrastructure which falls in line with the Taita Taveta government’s Country Integrated Development Plan (CIDP) will improve local production and create jobs.

According to Evans Mbinga, county officer in charge of agriculture, this plant could generate an annual turnover of Sh1 billion at full operation. The county which produces 55 tons of bananas daily transported to Mombasa, can allocate up to 1,000 hectares for the crop.

“The banana processing plant will add value to the local community,” said the official adding that the local market would consume banana products such as biscuits, chips, cakes, and wine produced at the plant.
