Algeria: Milk sector divided by a crisis between producers and processors

Thursday, 24 September 2015 11:07

(Ecofin Agency) - The end of the crisis in the Algerian milk sector is nowhere near. In effect, the meeting between the different actors in the sector, which was held last Sunday, did not result in anything concrete. The milk processors only proposed an increase of 2 dinars with respect to the 35 dinars actual purchase price for the litre of the commodity. Which brings the amount levied by the producers to 49 dinars taking into account the subsidy of 12 dinars granted by the government.

This offer did not miss provoking the wrath of the producers who demand a minimum price of 75 dinars which represents their break-even point. Furious, they have threatened to permanently suspend their supply of milk to the processors.

Before carrying out their threat, they will go again to a last-chance meeting to be held on 29 September, states El Watan.
