Tunisia: positive prospects for dates and pomegranates, less so for olive oil

Thursday, 24 September 2015 13:55

(Ecofin Agency) - In Tunisia, the date crop will register an increase of 10% at the end of the 2015/2016 season. Indeed, the country should harvest approximately 246,000 tons of dates against 223,000 tons a year ago. According to the authorities, pre-harvest operations are going well.

For pomegranates, the goal is to get 82,000 tons for the new season, which represents 5,000 tons more than the previous one. Moreover, the fruits this year will be of distinct quality, the Tunisian authorities claimed.

If for dates and pomegranates, the prospects are good, the production of olive oil should oscillate between 130,000 and 140,000 tons. This would be an underachievement for a sector which registered a previous production of 295,000 tons of oil. It should be recalled that this exceptional crop enabled the country to go to the rescue of Spain and Italy, world leaders for olive, whose productions were respectively in the grips of drought and bacterial attack.
