Guinea: Cotton marketing year begins with a target of 11,400 tons

Thursday, 26 November 2015 19:36

(Ecofin Agency) - Guinea just launched its marketing season for cotton. According to authorities, the operation for which projected output is 11,400 tons will cost government about 39 billion of Guinean Francs.

With this campaign, the executive intends to strengthen the ongoing programme for the revival of cotton industry. Indeed, the country plans to help about 300,000 cotton-depending rural households from the Upper Guinea, Central Guinea, and Guinea Forest regions, obtain decent incomes from this sector, APA says.

Guinea’s ginned cotton in 1997 was at 37,000 tons. Plunging a year later, this production has been struggling to remain afloat and this is what drove president Alpha Condé, in February 2011, to announce a plan for its revival.
