Morocco: Saham postpones launching of agricultural policy

Wednesday, 27 January 2016 18:37

(Ecofin Agency) - Morocco’s public opinion believes that the agreement between Saham and the ministry of agriculture for the implementation of an agricultural policy is nothing more than a deal between ministers. In response to this, Saham which is owned by minister of industry, Moulay Hafid Elalamy , has decided to suspend the agreement and wait for other actors of the insurance sector to enter the agricultural insurance sector.

Responding to a letter from the ministry of agriculture stating that agricultural insurance was an open market, the Moroccan federation of insurance and reinsurance companies, FMSAR, said other firms would soon enter this market.

In the case whereby Saham gets back and successfully implements the accord, it will cover 4 million ha of land since its Moroccan agricultural insurance mutual (Mamda in French) already covers 1 million ha..
