Demographic growth and calorie deficit: Africa’s curse and el dorado of agro-industrials

Thursday, 28 January 2016 07:48

(Ecofin Agency) - According to exchange operator CME group, India and Africa are the two regions where agricultural and agro-industrial companies should focus their attention. Africa for example shows an extremely interesting combination: a demographic boom combined with a significant calorie deficit.

The US census bureau believes that Africa, despite having a population which should rise to 1.91 billion by 2040 from 1.15 billion now will not be able to satisfy its needs in food as a result of the lack in cultivated lands and weather conditions which are not always favorable. Meaning that even if Africa was to increase its output, it would not stop importing agricultural products, on the contrary even, these imports could increase, CME group says.

Agricultural and agro-food companies which are about to enter the African market should benefit from the various logistic developments the continent is currently recording.
