Algeria expects far higher cereal production for the 2018-19 season

Monday, 30 April 2018 17:28

(Ecofin Agency) - In Algeria, the cereal (wheat and barley) production should increase significantly during the 2018-19 season.  This was revealed to Algérie presse service (APS) by Noureddine Amrani, head of cereals division at the Algerian Inter-professional Cereals Office (OAIC), without any figure.

This good prospect is mainly attributable to abundant rainfall in the country’s East, West and Center sides, according to the official.

In addition, Mr. Amrani said that thanks to this increase in production, the country plans to meet 90% of durum wheat needs and 100% of barley consumption by 2020.

Let’s recall that back in 2017, Algeria produced 3.5 million tons of cereals and disbursed $2.7 billion in imports. Cereals are growing over  3.5 million hectares.
