Morocco: cereal season reports better results than forecast

Thursday, 30 July 2015 18:06

(Ecofin Agency) - In Morocco, the 2014/2015 cereal season had a good final surprise in store for analysts who were already expecting a record level estimated at 110 million quintals. However the kingdom managed to produce 115 million quintals (qx), about 5% lower than the initial forecasts.

The major part of the production was concentrated in the basins of Doukkala, Chaouia and El Haouz which generated between themselves 45% of the total crop. The crop is mainly made up of common wheat (56 million qx), barley (35 million qx) and durum wheat (24 million qx). It is also worth noting that this good harvest was made possible thanks to the increase in yield per sown area which now stands at 21.4qx/hectare.

Among the factors which supported this performance, Medias 24 counts the extremely favourable weather conditions, characterised by an excellent distribution of rainfall over space and time, and the government’s efforts in terms of agricultural mechanisation and selling the production.
