Burkina Faso wants to seed clouds to boost rainfall

Saturday, 18 July 2015 23:47

(Ecofin Agency) - In Burkina Faso, “Saaga” is the name of the new government initiative dedicated to prevent poor harvests, thanks to the cloud seeding technique.

Costing FCfa 650 million, this operation should allow for a good season and ensure that dams are filled according to a source from the Burkinabè ministry of agriculture quoted by the APA.

The commissioning of this initiative comes in a context of low rainfall over the whole country for the period running from April to June 2015.

Moreover, farmers are currently late for the new season. In addition to operation “Saaga”, the country will endeavour to resort to supplementary irrigation and to improve the agricultural production during the dry season in order to complement that of the rainy season.

According to the authorities, Burkina Faso should harvest over 7 million metric tons of agricultural products at the end of the new season.
