Ban in DR Congo of the film entitled “The man who repairs women, Hippocrate’s wrath” (L’homme qui répare les femmes, La colère d’Hippocrate). A production focusing on Dr Denis Mugwege (photo) who has dedicated his work to monitoring women victims of the war. “The army feels denigrated, this is a total injustice”, explained the Minister of Communication, Lambert Mende, also spokesperson for the Congolese government.
The minister highlights the problems of translation. According to him, comments made in local Mashi and Swahili languages by Congolese women, were incorrectly translated in French. Hence, they unjustly criticise the Congolese army. “The way the army is treated is not correct (…) There is a will to push the army down and we cannot accept that”, said Lambert Mende, quoted by Agence France Press.
Dr Mukwege rather criticised the decision of the authorities of his country: “It is beyond understanding that witness accounts from women and civil society actors telling in this documentary film the harsh reality experienced by tens of thousands of women these last 20 years, but also their ability to regain the will to live with dignity, could upset so much the authorities to the point of taking the decision to ban it”. Dr Mugwege laments not being able to show the film in the Panz Hospital, in Bukavu, to his patients and colleagues.
