Thursday, 07 January 2016 15:34

Netflix, the global VoD (Video on Demand) giant finally lands in South Africa. The American firm just launched its streaming service in the country.

Streaming will cost R126 ($7.99) per month and can be accessed on one screen only. The High Definition or HD costs R158 ($9.99) per month and can be accessed on two screens simultaneously. With the Ultra HD Premium, streaming can be done on four screens simultaneously. It costs R190 ($11.99) per month. Netflix has decided to offer a free-trial month to all its new subscribers.

South Africa is one out of more than 100 countries where Netflix has recently launched its streaming service. In South Africa, the firm has two major rivals namely Naspers with its VoD service ShowMax, and PCCW.

On January 6, 2016, Netflix president, Reed Hastings at the International Consumers Electronics Show in Las Vegas, USA, said his service was the cheapest alternative available on the market. During the event, he highlighted that online streaming made linear TV seem outdated.
