Angola: the journalists union defends the minimum wage of USD 1847 for media professionals

Monday, 09 November 2015 13:40

For the Angolan Journalists’ Union, the minimum wage of a journalist should be of 250,000 kwanzas, approximately USD 1847. All media groups, whether public or private are invited to use this scale. The announcement was made by the general secretary of the organisation, Teixeira Cândido. This was on 22 October 2015 during the inauguration ceremony for the new members of the union.

In Angola, many journalists earned wages far below 250,000 kwanzas. The union is looking to start negotiations with several media to improve and safeguard the financial situation of news’ professionals.

Teixeira Cândido explained to the Angolan Press Agency (ANGOP) that it is a matter of urgency to improve the current legal framework of the press, in order to protect some journalists’ rights. For the general secretary, it is also important to defend journalists from media bosses in order to guarantee the freedom of the press.
