Ashok Beeharry and Ritvik Neerbun, two of MBC’s (Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation) journalists received a warning after participating to a debate-forum organized in November 2015 by media Trust, public institution that trains journalists.
The debate to which these journalists participated was titled: “What future is there for journalism in public service”. MBC said they expressed political opinions during a public debate. In addition to the warning, Ashok Beeharry has been stripped of his position within MBC. He also lost all his advantages as an employee, notably his telephone line.
According to the Mauritian newspaper “L’Express”, the two journalists now challenge the sanctions imposed them and intend to refer the matter to the Head of State and the Prime Minister. They are backed by Media Trust who on November 25, 2015, committed to defending their right to freedom of opinion and expression.
The institution said it had personally invited the two journalists and that during the meeting they made smart, clear and relevant comments. In their respective reports, both of them had given their vision of the future of public service and information while highlighting the challenges and the mission characterizing the MBC.
