For the first time in history, Senegal is going to host a “Black Friday”. Just like in the United States, this day represents the day of the biggest sales’ discounts. The concept was imported in Senegal by Jumia, one of Africa’s main e-commerce platforms.
In fact, Jumia will hold a press conference on November 19, 2015, to provide more details concerning the event. In the United States, the 2015 “Black Friday” will take place on November 27. This mega-discounts day became a tradition in the country since the 1970s. Shops offer up to 85% discount in some cases. The event always takes place on Friday, thus the name “Black Friday”. It is considered as the unofficial kick-off for Christmas purchases. Another tradition: “Cyber Monday” which happens on the Monday following “Black Friday” and where various e-shops offer amazing discounts.
On “Black Friday” day, various riots often take place all over the USA. In 2014 for example, about 133.7 million American buyers rushed to purchase items on that Friday and throughout the following week-end; and spent around $50.9 billion. However, these numbers are still lower than those of 2013...
The “Black Friday” is also considered as the day when sales of American traders usually shift from red to dark, which is the color associated with positive sums. The concept crossed the US borders and has been adopted by Canada and other European countries. Jumia has now decided to experiment it in Senegal.
