Facebook and Twitter are in the run to buy TV rights, Reuters reported indicating that both social networks approached various programmers to secure content rights.
“Our goal with live video is to work with our partners to move to a sustainable monetization model quickly,” Facebook told Reuters. “We are not focused on acquiring the rights to conventional TV programs”, Zuckerberg’s firm added.
Facebook has already started negotiation with the National Football League –NFL, for digital rights to Thursday Night Football. Citing the New York Post, Reuters said executives from both sides met repeatedly over the past few weeks.
Given that Facebook said it is not interested in conventional TV programs, the social media should not broadcast TV series and movies.
As for Twitter who declined to comment, it already owns Periscope. And for a year now, Periscope started online streaming.
Facebook and Twitter so far have manifested their interest to stream TV programs only in the US. However, it would not be surprising to see them look out for programs in other countries, so as to satisfy their audience.
