In the South-Kivu in DR Congo, a Club of Community Radios was created on the Initiative for Transparency in Mining Industries (ITIE – Initiative pour la Transparence dans les Industries Extractives). This club, like many others in the country, gathers journalists trained and committed to this process.
The delegates of the community radios in South-Kivu, also members of the Network of Radios and Televisions of East Congo (RATECO/Sud-Kivu – Réseau des Radios et Télévisions de l’Est du Congo), have undertaken to work for more transparency in the operation of the important wealth of the subsoil in this area of DR Congo.
The challenge is to share information in order to end in the monitoring of mines which operation is still traditional and informal, despite the considerable revenues generated. Revenues from which the populations do not benefit much.
The Central Africa news agency notes that the authorities are protecting companies and operations at the expense of residents who suffer the consequences of the pollution and destruction of the environment.
As community media, the radios want to inform the local communities in order to enable them to participate in the transparent management of the wealth in their area. The first step is to facilitate the access to ITIE reports, so that the journalists themselves can start the sensitisation through various radio programmes and support the plea of civil society organisations.
