YouTube in search of original African content to attract more subscriptions

Thursday, 23 August 2018 18:50

YouTube wishes to buy original African content. Indeed, the subsidiary of Alphabet group wishes to buy original contents from every part of the world to boost subscription to its premium services. In Africa, this need is increasingly pressing due to an increase in Netflix subscriptions in the continent.

Luke Hyams, head of originals for the EMEA region, explained that the company wishes to attract more subscriptions by increasing the quantity of content Africans can identify themselves with. He indicated short formats like series which are the most viewed format on the web. We are looking for unique contents created by authors with a high potential appeal internationally and which takes us into a new universe or environment that maybe, we have never seen before, he commented.

In the meantime, Netflix is heavily buying and producing contents which would greatly attract Africans.
