The Minister of Higher Education and Professional Training Mary Teuw Niane (photo), has called on the government for the need to put a strategic digital development plan in place in Senegal. On 21 September 2015, during the signing of a partnership agreement between the Senegalese Programme for Youth Entrepreneurship (PSE-J) and the Group Idyal, specialised in computing and telecoms services, the Minister declared that "Senegal has the potential to take first place in the digital arena in Africa".
But the digital development which already benefits from a framework of rich training in Senegal - several universities already train in computer sciences and digital fields- that is able to generate the creation of millions of jobs in the sector, from conception right through to cutting edge technologies, must be rigorously supervised. Digital technology, it is not only social media, it is equally a whole panoply of value added services, the contents, e-commerce, connected devices etc. As well as creating jobs, the digital sector is therefore equally an important source of wealth for the country.
"We need not feel inferior to Morocco (...), Senegal can be at the top of digital technology in Africa, if we give it the means", claimed Mary Teuw Niane.
