By 2023, the number of subscribers on Subscription Video-On-Demand (SVOD) across sub-Saharan Africa will reach 9.99 million, up from the current 1.56 million. This was revealed in the “Sub-Saharan Africa OTT TV & Video Forecasts” report by Digital TV Research, a TV market data analyzer.

South Africa is set to be the market leader with about 3.37 million subscribers, followed by Nigeria with 2.61 million subscribers. The two countries will account for 60% of SVOD clients in the region by 2023, down from 74% in 2017.

Other African countries are expected to see a boom in SVOD subscribers. The report also pointed out that the service will be operational in 35 countries across the region with Netflix, Showmax and iRoko being the top platforms holding 90% of the subscribers by 2023.
