Facebook now available in fulfulde, sixth African language integrated to the plateform

Friday, 30 September 2016 20:31

It is now possible to access Facebook in fulfulde, another African dialect. This is the sixth African dialect to be integrated on Facebook after somali, kiswahili, afrikeens, kinyarwanda and hausa. The global social network just announced the news about the fulfulde, also called pular or peul.

This language is used by about 60 million people in 20 nations across West and Central Africa, and by their respective Diasporas. In Senegal, Mali, Mauritania, Guinea, Niger, Burkina Faso, Chad, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Sudan, a lot of people speak it.

Facebook is already available fulfude at 50%. Indeed, most used items have already been translated. “Yidu” for Like; “Yowu” for Comment and “Senndu” to Share. Functionalities such as settings, home are also displayed in fulfude.

However, there is still a lot to do before the platform is fully available in the language. Facebook thus called for the expertise of its users. For fulfude and other integrated African languages, the social network still struggles to make translation perfect.
