Nigeria: Pipelines explosion causes huge oil spill in Bayelsa

Monday, 01 February 2016 15:53

Following the Thursday night explosion from Oil Pipelines owned by Nigerian Agip Oil Company, the residents of Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State have said that multiple bombings of the company’s oil pipelines have made thousands of barrels of oil to pollute waterways, farms and fishing grounds.

Fishermen in the community have revealed that for two days, oil kept flowing without being checked.

Meanwhile ENI’s spokesman noted that 16,000 bopd were lost from the explosion and the company on Monday commenced work for production to resume.

According to the leader of the community, Eke-Spiff Erempagamo, the spill is enormous and it is the biggest in years in the local government area. Residents however blamed the explosions on militants who are aiming for a larger share of oil revenues from the producing states, Associated Press reports.
