Poor countries need $1,000 billion to tackle climate change

Tuesday, 01 December 2015 22:14

The 48 world’s poorest countries will require $1,000 billion between 2020 and 2030 to implement their strategies to mitigate the effects of global warming.

According to a report published by the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) and based on the contributions to tackling the crisis released by the concerned countries, these countries will require an amount of $93 billion annually starting from 2020, when all decisions taken during the COP 21 talks are to take effect. While $53.8 billion of this sum is needed to reduce greenhouse gases, $39.9 billion is for adapting to climate change.

“A fair and effective deal at Paris should prioritize the investment of international public climate finance for this group to implement their climate action plans, while agreeing measures to help better-off countries attract private climate finance,” said IIED’s director Andrew Norton, deploring the fact that these least developed countries currently have access to only a third of all international climate funding.

These countries will not be able to implement their climate action plans, the report stated. They will need technical and financial support from the international community.

The report is part of the COP 21 climate change talks where some disagreements already arise. Narendra Modi, Prmie Minister of India which is the world’s third polluter in terms of greenhouse gases emission, requested in a forum published in the Financial Times that his country benefit from a preferential treatment. He says that negotiations should include some exceptions for developing countries so as not to “prevent their growth” by not demanding the end of fossil fuels.

It should be reminded that there are 12 “dissidents” countries which have not yet submitted their plans to tackle this global warming crisis.
