The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) will stop providing power to all public institutions that still owe him. This was announced by the vice-minister of Energy, John Jinapor, who also said big consumers such as hotels and nightclubs in the same situation would receive the same treatment thereby allowing health establishments in the country to have more power.
The supply cut is part of the company’s strategy to force public institutions to clear their debts. Most of these institutions in fact refuse to comply claiming it is the government’s responsibility. As a result of this, ECG owes the Volta River Authority, thus affecting its operation.
According to analysts, the power cut which should have come in earlier would allow the company to clear its debts. However, they do not believe government will carry out the threat on the various public institutions that implement its policy and programmes; moreover considering that most of these institutions receive their allocations late with sums which are far below what is demanded from them.
