Egypt: Electricity power suppliers are concerned about the authorization system put in place by NREA

Friday, 02 February 2018 17:55

In Egypt, independent solar power producers are worried about the permit granted to some distribution companies to build solar plants. The private suppliers, which have been allowed by the New and Renewable Energy Autority (NREA) to build these plants of up to 500 KW, are worried because their main customers have been authorized to build those same plants, making them direct competitors.

This is not the only concern they have. They are also reluctant due to the billing system in place.

According to this system, final consumer scan generate energy by their own means and use the one provided by electric grids when their own is unable to meet their need. Also in case of excess production, they can sell the surplus to an electricity distribution company.

To date, NREA has authorized about 250 solar power companies to produce electricity in the country.
