Liberia: Mount Coffee hydropower dam to be tested, for the first time

Saturday, 03 December 2016 03:00

The first production unit of Mount Coffee hydropower plant will be tested for the first time this Saturday, Dec. 3. With a capacity of 22MW, the turbine will be tested until December 15, when it will effectively go online.

It should be recalled that the testing is a step toward the rehabilitation of the Mount Coffee hydropower dam which has a total capacity of 88 MW. The infrastructure was greatly damaged during the 1990 civil war.

In anticipation of probable issues that might occur during the testing, management of the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) has apologized to its customers.

The current filling level of the plant’s reservoir is 28.5m above sea-level, thus 0.5m below its maximum filling capacity.
