Nigeria: Erratic electricity supply created a $300 million loss, in Q1 2018

Thursday, 05 April 2018 21:03

Nigeria’s energy sector lost NGN108 billion (over $300 million) during the first quarter of 2018, due to irregular electricity supply in the country.

According to the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI), which revealed the information, the country lost around NGN1.5 billion monthly due to water and gas supply issues as well as the bad condition of existing power transmission lines.

The chronic vandalism of gas pipelines is the main cause of these irregularities while the lack of maintenance led to transmission network issues. For the record, last January 25, the electricity network generated only 3,917 MW for a capacity of more than 7,000 MW. The country’s power demand is 12,000 MW.
