Nigeria: StareCore Nuclear to set 23 micro nuclear grids

Tuesday, 05 June 2018 20:12

The Canadian company StareCore Nuclear plans to set 23 small modular of nuclear reactors across Nigerian plants to boost the country’s power capacity.

“The proposal comprises the erection of 23 micro grids across the more remote regions of the country thus minimizing, or even eliminating, the expenditure that the government will need to make on electricity infrastructure in those target areas,” the companies said., adding that “the StarCore Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) design is inherently safe, as judged by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) which means it cannot overheat and would shut down automatically when there is a problem,”.

The company will sell the energy generated from its facilities to the country under a power purchase agreement. It hopes to raise funds needed to build the infrastructures thanks to a sovereign guarantee. However, the project’s implementation is subject to approval from national leaders.
