Tuesday, 05 September 2017 15:13

In Ethiopia, the first biomass power plant will generate its first output by December 2017. This was disclosed by Bizuneh Tolcha, an official from the ministry of power, who added that the infrastructure is 94.3% complete.

The “Reppie Waste to Energy Facility” as it is named, will have a capacity of 50MW and is situated in Addis-Ababa, the capital. The plant will process waste from the country’s biggest dump which extends over 5.3ha. "The project will cost 118.5 million U.S. dollars to complete. It is to be fully covered by Ethiopia's government and when complete will process 350,000 tonnes of solid waste annually," Tolcha said.

The project was developed by British firm Cambridge Industries Limited and the China Electrical Engineering Company (CNEEC), Xinhua reports. It will prevent the emission of 46,494 tons of greenhouse gases, every year.
