Mauritania: Exim Bank of India dedicates $110 million to the expansion of the national power network

Thursday, 05 October 2017 21:10

(Ecofin Agency) - Mauritania received a $110 million loan from Exim Bank of India to build a 470km-long power line. The line, whose projected capacity is 225 KV, will connect the country’s two largest cities, Nouakchott and Nouadhibou. It is also planned to build high voltage electric grids in the framework of this project.

According to Moctar Ould Diay (picture), the Mauritanian minister of economy and finance, the power line’s construction aims to “first, create a high-voltage loop between the southern and western electric networks from OMVS’ interconnected network. It will also enable the north network’s interconnect with the networks of Maghreb and Europe”.

Mauritanian authorities also hope, by building this line, to generalize and optimize the use of less costly power sources like gas, hydraulic and wind.
