(Ecofin Agency) - Private developer FASOBIOGAZ, subsidiary of FASOGAZ, has installed the first electric biogas plant of Burkina Faso. With a capacity of 275 KW, it is located in the Kossodo industrial area in Ouagadougou and will supply about 4,100 households.
“We will gradually increase our production capacity to 1.4 MW by 2017. This will allow us to supply up to 22,700 households”, Gilbert Brenninkmeyer declared. Currently, the plant provides for 22 permanent jobs. This will move to 50 when the capacity of the plant will be increased.
The production will be from organic waste coming from the Ouagadougou cold-storage slaughterhouse, independent farmers and waste collectors. The bio-digester of a capacity of 40 tons per day will produce from mid-November the energy which will be directly transferred in the distribution system of the Société Nationale Burkinabé d’électricité (national electricity company).
“This is a small unit, but its production is substantial. With about 2,000 installations of this type, we could meet the demand of the population” Daniel Sermé, Director of Studies, Planning and Equipment of Sonabel, declared.
