Ghana: ACEP says Dumsor is not over as President announced

Monday, 07 March 2016 15:22

In Ghana, it could be possible to see ‘Dumsor’ or power outages re-emerge. This was announced by Policy think tank, Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP) which unlike President John Mahama who claimed the end of the outages, believes the power crisis is not over.

Load shedding has been suspended because the economy has not yet recovered,” said Ishmael Ackah, head of research and policy at ACEP. Indeed, the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) recently reported that various businesses have relocated to neighboring countries while others folded up waiting for power crisis to be resolved. The think tank thus believes that Dumsor will resurface when the industry, which consumes 67% of power supply, fully restart its activities.

Dumsor can only be said to be over when the estimated demand of 2,600 MW is there… and reserved margin of 25%, which we do not have,” Ishmael Ackah added.
