Egypt: Two Chinese firms to build charcoal-powered plants producing 4,000 MW

Friday, 08 January 2016 14:46

China’s Dongfang Electric Corporation (CDEC) and Shanghi Electric will build in Egypt, two charcoal-powered plants that have a total capacity of 4,000 MW.

The Minister of Power, Mohamed Shaker, announced last Wednesday, the signing of the construction agreements for these plants. CDEC will build a 1,980 MW plant and Shanghi Electric a 2,400 MW plant.

The construction of these infrastructures is part of Egypt’s objectives to build plants with a global capacity of 2,500 MW - 3,000 MW this year in order to overcome its energy deficit.

Due to the slump in prices of gas and oil as well as the increase in national energy demand, Egypt who was once an importing nation is now an exporter.
